Managing Anxiety: The Circle of Control and Influence

COVID-19 has led many of us to feel out of control. When we feel anxious, it can be helpful for us to look at:

  • what is in our control
  • what’s not in our control but may be influenced by us
  • other factors that are outside of our control and influence

An example of something that’s in our control might be our thoughts or practical actions, such as stocking up on necessities or even volunteering.  An example of something that’s in the circle of influence might include petitioning our local council or encouraging our loved ones to stay at home.  The virus itself is an example of something that’s outside of our control and influence.
When we break down our anxieties into these different spheres, we can start to refocus on what is in our control to change, which can give us a renewed sense of purpose and empowerment.
