Findings from the Advertising Association’s All In 2023 census and NABS All Ears 2023 community consultation, have led NABS to prioritise the development of Manager’s Mindsets.

Why managers need NABS’s support more than ever
According to the Advertising Association’s All In data, 33% of us are dealing with stress and anxiety that affects our work, with certain groups like early careers, LGBTQIA+, and disabled employees feeling these impacts disproportionately.
The NABS All Ears consultation found, 71% of respondents believe the industry needs to prioritise mental wellness, yet 35% feel unable to openly discuss it.
Expectations on managers are high
Yet training for managers is often overlooked. Early-careers are viewing managers in a state of overwhelm. (NABS All Ears, 2023)
Managers are a go-to for people experiencing mental wellness issues
42% of people experiencing mental wellness issues would take them to their line manager first, despite a widespread awareness that managers were not always prepared for their responsibilities. (NABS All Ears, 2023)
Managers can contribute towards creating a supportive and inclusive environment
Often a supportive context is not present or is not felt equally by everyone within the business. 23% of people in our community feel like mental wellness is not taken seriously within the industry, and 35% feel they would not be able to talk about their mental wellness challenges in the workplace. The danger here is that it is often those who most need support who feel least able to talk (NABS All Ears, 2023)
Support talent retention
Workers who rate their manager as ineffective are significantly more likely to be planning to leave their organisation in the next 12 months than those who say their line manager is effective (The rise of the accidental manager, CIM 2023)
Alongside the ethical and moral reasons, it makes good business sense
Deloitte Mental Health & Employers March 2022 analysis suggests that measures by employers to improve the mental health of their employees will yield £5 on average for every £1 spent” Deloitte Mental Health & Employers March 2022
